Last night fierce Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona shared the honours as France’s Karim Benzema and Spain’s Alexia Putellas took home the men's and women's UEFA Player of the Year awards respectively – the first time for Benzema and Putellas' second consecutive win.
For the men, since it was created in 2011, it’s often been a two-horse race between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Last year, Chelsea's Jorginho won it, and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk won it in 2018-19, but this season Benzema was a clear winner, notching up 44 goals in 46 games for Real Madrid as they won La Liga and the Champions League.
Aided by Euro 22, women’s football has had a huge year but before the tournament had even kicked off, one player, in particular, replica uhren was head and shoulders above anyone else throughout the season – Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas. In 26 starts, Putellas contributed to 33 goals, scoring 18 and assisting 15, as FC Barcelona Femení ended the season with a domestic treble. While they lost out in the final of the Champions League to Lyon, on the way to getting there, their quarter-final and semi-final games at Camp Nou were watched by 91,553 and 91,648 fans in the stadium respectively.
Though Putellas suffered a heartbreaking injury on the eve of Euro 22, not even England’s Beth Mead could prevent the 28-year-old from picking up her second UEFA Women's Player of the Year, which Lucy Bronze won in 2018/19.
But the silverware didn’t stop there. As Benzema and Putellas stood together to raise their trophies and receive much well-deserved applause, both showed off some pretty major watch flexes.
Putellas wore a Hublot Classic Fusion King 33mm with gold diamonds. Though marketed as a women’s watch, given the likes of Tyler, the Creator’s penchant for tiny watches, it isn’t outside the realms of possibility that a fashion-forward man could pull off wearing the same model. In any case, with the men's and women's World Cups coming within a year of one another, rest assured we'll be seeing a lot more Hublot watches on footballers' wrists as the brand continues to excel in its role as tournament sponsors.
In Benzema’s case, he looked dapper in a nicely tailored black Fendi pinstripe and matching FF micro detail single-breasted suit, white shirt and classic air tie combo. As a serial watch collector though – just like Ronaldo and Messi, it wasn’t a case of ‘would he wear a watch’, but rather which one? – he went classic with this stainless steel 40mm Patek Philippe Nautilus blue dial, which was perfectly befitting of his UEFA Player of the Year award in many respects as, when you consider the Nautilus has recently been discontinued, it makes both his watch, and trophy, priceless.
Congratulations to both Benzema and Putellas, two absolute ballers – we look forward to more goals and watch flexes this season, and it bodes well for both of them in the lead up to the Ballon d'Or in October. For more details, please visit:www.aaawatches.de
