 Iam a firm believer that it would do Panerai a lot of good if it axed about 80% of its currently offered references and trimmed its portfolio down to a few pieces, historic and modern classics, alike, representing the essence of the company. Although the brand has certainly made a lot of folks very happy by allowing them to find a watch exactly to their liking from such an extensive and tirelessly manipulated portfolio, I still think this apparent desire to eventually meet every individual request for a dial color, case size, or subdial placement would be great to see disappear, at least for a while. Inspired by the 1965 King Seiko KSK (the second K stands for Kisei-Tsuki, or “stop seconds” in Japanese), the two new watches are the slimmest King Seikos yet—even slimmer than the manual 1965 forebear. Decidedly restrained in their design, the King Seiko SJE089 and SJE091 foretell some shifts for the King Seiko line. The case design of the King Seiko collection is maintained, though this is slimmer than previous releases, with a 38.6mm diameter and a 10.7mm thickness (1.2mm thinner than the previous models). That should mean a more wearable watch, though having tried on previous King Seikos, I never found wearability to be an issue. Four new solar chronographs join the Seiko Prospex collection marking the company’s association with the World Athletics Championships to be held in Budapest, Hungary, in August, 2023. Officially called the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph, all four watches sport a new movement with the Seiko Caliber 8A50, a 1/100-second chronograph with a +/- 15-seconds per month precision rating. The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph watch is 42mm-wide, 12.9mm-thick, and its lug-to-lug distance is 48.3mm, making it reasonably thick for a highly functional chronograph and proportionate to the 42mm diameter.
